Embossing
All standard ISO lines and in smaller volumes in non-ISO positions
OCR characters (Large Numbers) can only be numeric charaters or space, but all the other lines can be alpha numeric
Encoding
All to ISO standards and position for Lo Co and Hi Co in tracks 1 2 and 3 and for all tapes as follows
Track 1 (closest to the top edge of the card)
Can be encoded with alpha and numeric characters, e.g. MR. J. BLOGGS 0123456789. The total number of characters shall not exceed 79, which includes START and END SENTINELS, LRC and SEPARATORS. In other words, a maximum of 76 data characters.
The total number of characters possible to store on Track 1 is 79 at a recording density of 210 bits per inch. However, some customers use Track 1 for duplicate information and may want to use the lower bit density of 75 bits per inch, in which case the characters can only be numeric and the total possible is 40 numbers.
Track 2 (is the next track "middle" from the top edge)
Can be encoded with numeric characters only, e.g. 0123456789. The total number of characters shall not exceed 40, which includes START and END SENTINELS, LRC and SEPARATORS. In other words a maximum of 37 data characters.
The 40 numeric only characters are encoded at a bit density of 75 bits per inch. This is the most popular track for read-only applications
Track 3 (the track furthest from the top edge of the card)
Can be encoded with numeric characters only, e.g. 0123456789. The total number of characters shall not exceed 107, which includes START and END SENTINELS, LRC and SEPARATORS. In other words, a maximum of 104 data characters numeric only characters at 210 bits per inch. However, some customers may request low density recording (75 bpi) with a maximum of 40 numbers.

Used by Watermark Readers only and is above TRACK1 the magnetic tape is higher and wider than normal

Encoding is not always necessary on these stripes, as a 10 digit number is permanently applied to the tape during manufacture. However Track 2 can be encoded if required Special conditions apply to Watermark Magnetics, which can be referred to in the documents issued by THORN SECURE SCIENCE
